I have just found a census entry for an ancestor who was the Inn Keeper and Beer Seller of the Ship inn. In 1901 it was 64 year old Richard Howle and his 64 year old wife Mary.
Richard had been a coal miner since the age of 14 and was born in Burslem but most of his life, prior to becoming the landlord, was spent in Audley, assumedly where the work was. *

Awakened by a noise on Saturday night, Mrs Howle, landlady of the Ship Inn, Burslem, discovered a man at the foot of her bed. He at once turned to escaper, but she grappled him and though he finally wrenched himself free, he left part of his coat in her hands.
The man, whose name was Cornes, was afterwards arrested, and was on Monday sent to prison for six weeks.
