ALDERTON is a village and parish, in Wilford hundred, Woodbridge union and county court district, rural deanery of Wilford, archdeaconry of Suffolk, and diocese of Norwich, East Suffolk, one mile west from the sea, and 8 miles south-east from Woodbridge. near the mouth of the navigable river Deben. The church of St. Andrew is a brick building: about 10 feet north are the ruins of the tower. The living is a rectory, commuted at �634 11s. 8d. per annum, with residence, in the gift of T. Archer, Esq., and the Bishop of Norwich, the latter having every fourth turn; it is held by the Rev. Charles Goodwyn Archer, M.A., of Jesus College, Cambridge. Lord Huntingfield and the Bishop of Norwich are lords of the manor; and Lord Rendlesham and Lord Huntingfield are the principal land owners. The population in 1861 was 634; area, 2,543acres; value of assessed property, �3,664.
