ALDHAM is a parish and small village, in Cosford hundred and union,
Hadleigh county court district, rural
deanery and archdeaconry of Sudbury, and diocese of Ely, West Suffolk, a mile
and a half from Hadleigh station, and 71 miles north-east from London. The
church of St. Mary is very old, with a Norman round tower and 1 bell. Date of
earliest register, 1606. The living is a rectory, value £300, with residence,
about a mile from the church, in the gift of T. B. Lennard, Esq., and held by
the Rev. Charles W.
Lloyd Rev. Charles Lloyd, M.A. Thomas B. Lennard, Esq., is lord of the manor.
The charities of this parish are 20s. per annum. Aldham Street is half a mile
north-east. Aldham Priory is one mile east. Dr. Taylor's monument is half a mile
south. The population of the parish in 1861 was 267, and its extent is 1,744
acres of clayey soil.
