ALPHETON (or ALPHEATON) is a parish and small village, 8 miles from
Sudbury, 8 from Bury St. Edmund's, and 3 north-west from Lavenham, in Babergh
hundred, Sudbury union and county court district, rural deanery and archdeaconry
of Sudburv, and diocese of Ely, West Suffolk. The church of St. Peter and St.
Paul is in the Early English style. Earliest date of register 1605. The living
is a rectory, annual value £286, with residence, in the gift of. and held by,
the Rev. William John Aislabie, .M.A., of Trinity College, Cambridge. N. C.
Barnardiston, Esq., is lord of the manor. The principal landowners besides the
lord of the manor are John Gosling, Esq., — Boldero, Esq.; and William Crown,
Esq. The annual value of the charities is £1 17s. The population in 1861 was
298, and the extent of the parish is 1,202 acres, principally arable, and
