ASHBY is a small parish, in the hundred of Mutford and Lothingland,
Lowestoft county court district, rural deanery of Lothingland, archdeaconry of
Suffolk, and diocese of Norwich, East Suffolk, 6 miles north-west from
Lowestoft, 6 south-west from Yarmouth, and 2 from Somerleyton station. The
church of St. Mary is a small ancient building, with octangular embattled tower:
it consists of a nave and chancel: In 1859 the tower and chancel were repaired,
and an east window put in. The living is a rectory, the tithes are commuted at
£205 per annum, with 12 acres of glebe land, In the gift of Charles Lucas, Esq.,
and held by the Rev. Charles Hlllyer. Sir Francis Crossley, Bart., M.P., is the
chief landowner. The population in 1861 was 70; area, 1,109 acres. Sand is found
