BACTON is a parish and considerable and well built village, in
Hartismere hundred and union, Stow county
court district, archdeaconry of Suffolk, diocese of Norwich, West Suffolk, one
mile south-west from Finningham station, 87 from London, 6 north from Stowmarket,
l9 from Ipswich, and 16 ½ from Bury. The church of St. Mary is a noble edifice
of stone, in the Decorated and Perpendicular styles; it has been thoroughly
restored and re-seated with open benches: it has nave, side aisles, chancel, and
tower surmounted with a small spire, and containing 6 bells; the roof of the
nave is elaborately carved and decorated; there is in the chancel a memorial
window of stained glass to the late Rev. Edward Burton Barker. The living is a
rectory, annual value £750, with residence, in the gift of, and held by, the
Rev. Augustus Barker Hemsworth, M.A. A considerable business is done in malting.
It was the lordship and demesne of the Bishop of Norwich till about 1535, when
it was given to the Duke of Norfolk, who conveyed it, in exchange, in 1558, to
Sir John Tyrell. George Tomline, Esq., M.P., is lord of the manor, but the soil
belongs to many small landowners. In 1861 the population was 733, and the area
is 2,204 acres. The soil is mixed; crops of the usual kind.
