BADWELL-ASH in
1844, or Little Ashfield, is a neat village, 4 miles E. by S. of Ixworth, and
its parish contains 458 souls, and 1,860 acres of land. In the 9th of Edward I.,
it was the lordship of William Creketote, and it was afterwards held, together
with Great Ashfield, by the prior and monks of Ixworth. At the dissolution, it
was granted to Richard Codington. It is now in two manors-Badwell Ash and
Shackerland, belonging to Miss R. Clough; but a great part of the soil is the
property of Lord Thurlow, the Rev. T. B. Norgate, and the Mayhew, Baker, Moss,
Wilson, Parker, and a few other families. The Church, (St. Mary) is a perpetual
curacy, valued at �69. Miss R. Clough is patroness, and the Rev. Thomas
Burroughs Norgate, incumbent. The Town Estate has been vested from a nearly
period, in trust,for the reparation of the church and the relief of the poor, at
the discretion of the trustees and the churchwardens. It consists of the Town
House, occupied rent free, by poor families, and about 11a. of land, let for �12
3s. 6d. a year, which is wholly applied in the service of the church. For a
distribution of bread at the church, the poor have a yearly rent charge of 24s.,
left by Thomas Blackerby, in the 13th of Charles 2nd., out of the tithes of
Stow-upland. The late Thomas Richer, Esq., of this parish, left �400 to the
Suffolk General Hospital, in 1843.

Badwell Ash is a small, compact village and parish, 4 miles north from
Elmswell station, and 10 north east from Bury St Edmunds, in the Western
division of the county, Blackbourn
Hundred.
The church of St Mary is a handsome flint building, thoroughly restored in
1868.The register dates from 1559.
