Barrow in Kellys 1879 Directory.
Barrow is a parish in the Western division of the County, Thingoe
Hundred and Union. The village is half a mile in length; at the south end it
opens into a large green. It is 81 miles from London, via Bury, 6 west from Bury
St Edmunds and 2 south from Higham station, on the Bury and Newmarket railway,
which passes through the entire width of the parish.
The church of All Saints is an old building, with tower containing five bells,
erected apparently at the time of Henry VIII, with some parts older. The
register dates from 1542.
There is a small Congregational chapel, built in 1836; and a Primitive Methodist
chapel.
Near Barrow Hall is a moat, enclosing the site of the ancient manor house, now a
farm.
