BENACRE is a small parish and village, in Blything hundred and union,
Halesworth county court district, rural deanery of Dunwich, archdeaconry of
Suffolk, and diocese of Norwich, East Suffolk, 4 � miles north-east from
Wangford, 6 � south-east from Lowestof t, and 6 south-east from Beccles, The
church of St. Michael is a small neat building, with low square tower containing
1 bell: it consists of nave, chancel, and a porch and aisle on the south side,
and contains a very good organ. The register dates from about 1727; the earlier
ones have been destroyed by fire. The living is a rectory, consolidated with
that of Covehithe, formerly called North Hales, joint annual value �400, in the
patronage of Sir Edwd. S. Gooch, Bart., and held by the Rev. William Gooch. To
the north a small stream runs into the sea by a sluice, draining some marsh
land. Here are osier and reed beds. There are 1,660 acres, 50 acres of which is
Benacre Broad, a fine sheet of fresh water, which abounds with various kinds of
fish. The population in 1801 was 212.
