BEYTON (or BEIGHTON) is a parish, in Thedwestry hundred, Stow union,
Bury St. Edmund's county court district, Thedwestry rural deanery, Sudbury
archdeaconry, diocese of Ely, West Suffolk, one mile and a half from Thurston
station, 92 miles from London, and 5 ½ east-by-south from Bury. The church of
All Saints is a flint stone building, with a round tower: the body of the church
was rebuilt in 1854; it has nave, north aisle, chancel, porch, and font. The
register dates from 1539. The living is a rectory, value,£175, with residence,
and 10 acres of glebe land, in the gift of the Lord Chancellor, and held by the
Rev. Herbert Samuel Hawkins, M.A., of Jesus College, Oxford. There is a small
school, partly supported by the rector. Here is a malting and a steam corn mill.
The soil is a mixed sand, loam and clay; subsoil, mixed. Crops are wheat, oats,
and barley. The chief landowners are Philip Bennet, Esq., who is lord of the
manor, and Mr. G. Cooper. Beyton House, the property of Mr. W. Walpole, is a
handsome building, standing in a small and well wooded park. Beyton Lodge is a
neat residence. In 1861 the population was 360; area, 625 acres.
