BILDESTONE is a small neat town, in the hundred and union of Coslord, Hadleigh county court district, rural deanery and archdeaconry of Sudbury, and diocese of Ely, West Suffolk, 5 miles north-by-west from Hadleigh station, 75 from London, 14 west-north-west from Ipswich, 14 south-east from Bury St. Edmund's, and 10 north-east from Sudbury. The church of St. Mary, about a quarter of a mile from the town, is a large and handsome structure, in the Perpendicular style of architecture, and has nave and chancel, handsome porch, one brass, date 1509, with a good tower and 6 bells: the window at the east end is large and handsome: two new stained glass windows, by the present rector and his brothers, have recently been put in the chancel. The register commences 1558. The living is a rectory,' value £340, with residence, in the gift of, and held by, the Rev. Joseph Gedge, M.A., whose residence is cheerfully situated on an elevated point, a mile from the church, commanding a most extensive view of the surrounding country. Charles Tyrrell, Esq., is lord of the manor. The annual value of the charities of the parish is £4, arising from Smock meadow, and is distributed to poor widows of this parish. There is also land of the annual value of about £30 for the repairs of the church. Situated in the town is a very neat Baptist chapel, erected in 1844 by public subscription. There is a National school, in the Early English style, capable of accommodating 100 children, with master's residence, andgood garden attached; also a small school attached to the baptist chapel. Here were formerly a market and some small manufactures, now discontinued. A new clock tower was erected in 1864, by subscription, in the centre of the market place: it is a handsome building of red and white brick, on an arched base, with panelled shaft, surmounted by a spire with open bell turret; it was erected by Mr. Pettit. The population of the town and parish in 1861
was 788; there are 1,420 acres of tolerably good land, which is principally arable.
