BLAXHALL is a small village and parish, in Plomesgate hundred and union, county court district of Woodbridge, rural deanery of Orford, archdeaconry of Suffolk, and diocese of Norwich, East Suffolk, 2 miles from the Alde navigation, 5 south-south-west from Saxmundhm, 6 west from Aldborough, and8 � north-east from Woodbridge. The church of St. Peter is a brick building, with stone tower, and in 1863 underwent complete restoration. The register commences in 1673. The living is a rectory, annual value �500, with residence, in the gilt of the Rev. Alfred Naunton Bates, M.A., and A. lngleby, Esq., and held by the Rev. A. N. Bates, M.A. The Earl of Guildford is lord of the manor. There is a charity, amounting to �18 per annum, arising from a house bequeathed by Mr. Garthwaite, a former rector of this parish. Here is also a Free school, erected and supported by John George Sheppard, Esq., for 120 boys and girls. Here are clay and sand pits. The population in 1861was 589; area, 1,075 acres.
