BOTESDALE (or BOTOLPH'S DALE) is a hamlet to the parish of Redgrave,
and small town and polling place for West Suffolk, in Hartismere hundred and
union, and county court district of Eye, West Suffolk, 4 ½ miles west
from Mellis station, 26 ½ from Ipswich, 6 south-west from Diss in Norfolk, 8
west-by-north from Eye, 15 from Bury St. Edmund's, and 86 from London. A fair is
held on Holy Thursday for cattle and toys, and a statute or session on the
Thursday before Michaelmas for hiring servants. The living, annual value £780,
is annexed to Redgrave, in the gift of George Holt Wilson, Esq., and held by the
Rev. T. D. H. Wilson. A free Grammar school, endowed for the education of six
boys, was founded here in 1576, by Sir Nicholas Bacon, the master to be of
Corpus Christi College, Cambridge, where Sir Nicholas himself was educated; the
Rev. William Hepworth, M.A., is head master: there is a chapel attached, which
is dedicated to St. Botolph, and is, with the permission of the master, used for
evening service on Sundays by the Rector of Redgrave. The churches of
Rickinghall Inferior and Superior are close to the town.
The population in 1861 was 580; and the area is 1,260 acres.
