Boxford is a small parish, in the Babergh hundred, Cosford union,
Hadleigh county court district, Sudbury rural deanery and archdeaconry, and Ely
diocese, West Suffolk, situated on a small stream, 6 miles south-east-by-south
from Sudbury station. The church of St Mary is a large handsome building, having
nave, chancel, north and south aisles, and a tower containing 8 bells. The
registers date from the beginning of the 16th century. The living is a rectory,
rated in the Kings Books at £20 in the patronage of the Crown; it has now a
yearly rent charge of £650, awarded in 1843 in lieu of tithes, and 30 acres of
glebe, with residence held by the Rev John Byng, M.A., of Merton College,
Oxford. Here is a chapel for Independents. A pleasure fair is held on Easter
Monday. Boxford has a grammar school, endowed by Queen Elizabeth, and a National
school, built in 1838. Here are malt houses, flour mills, brick and tile kilns,
and gravel pits. Codenham Hall is an ancient mansion. In 1861 the population was
986; area 1,820 acres.
Hagmore Green is one mile south-west, and Wested Green is one south-east.
