BOXTED (or BOXSTEAD) is a parish, in Babergh hundred, Sudbury union and county court district, rural deanery, archdeaconry, and diocese of Ely, West Suffolk, 8 miles north-east from Clare and north-west from Sudbury stations, situate near a feeder of the river Stow. Boxted Hall, an ancient mansion, is the residence of John George Weller Poley, Esq., D.L., lord of the manor and chief landowner: this seat is still surrounded by a moat, supplied by a rivulet, which crosses the wooded grounds, 90 acres in extent: The Hall, which is very old, has lately been repaired, and its carvings restored. The manor originally belonged to the abbey of Bury St. Edmund's, after which it passed to Robert Harleston and the Duke of Gloucester, then to the Poleys, and lastly to the Wellers, who adopted the name of Poley, used by the present possessor. The church register commences in 1538. The living is a rectory, consolidated with that of Hartest, which were valued in the King's Books at £29 14s. 2d., and in 1835 at £652; it is in the gift of the Crown; and held by the Rev. Charles Borton, M.A., who resides at Hartest. There are several charities, one of which, bequeathed by a member of the Poley family in 1572, is equally divided among the poor of Boxted, Hartest, Somerton, Stanstead, and Glemsford: the school here was built by Mrs. Poley in 1852. The soil is mixed; and the crops are wheat, barley and oats. In 1861 the population was 192; area, 1,367 acres.
