BRADFIELD COMBUST is a parish, in Thedwestry hundred and rural
deanery, Thingoe union, county court district of Bury St. Edmund's, Sudbury
archdeaconry, and diocese of Ely, West Suffolk, 5 ½ miles south-south-east from
Bury St. Edmund's, and on the railway from Sudbury to Bury St. Edmund's. The
church of All Saints is a neat building, and has nave, chancel, south aisle (in
the latter are 3 bells), and old piscina in the chancel: there are mural
monuments to the Young familv, also tablets to the Edwards and Enraght families.
The living is a rectory, annual value £250, in the gift of Mrs. Lukin's
trustees, and held by the Rev. James Lukin, B.A., of Brasenose College, Oxford.
Bradfield Hall, the seat and residence of Arthur John .Young, Esq., J.P., is a
noble building, erected in 1867,on the site of the Old Hall, and is surrounded
by woods and plantations, huge oaks and evergreens: the north and principal
entrance is effected by slopes and terraces, overlooking some well stocked
fishponds: in the hall are some excellent paintings by the first masters: the
splendid drawing-room looks to the north-west, and adjoining is an extensive
library, containing upwards of 5,000 volumes, in various languages, standard
works on agriculture, &c. A. J. Young, Esq., and H. J. Oakes, Esq., are chief
landowners, The population in 1861 was 173, and the area is 818 acres.
