BRANDESTON is a large and well built village, in Loes hundred,
Plomesgate union, Framlingham and Saxmundham county court district, rural
deanery of Loose, archdeaconry of Suffolk, and diocese of Norwich, East Suffolk,
situate on the river Deben, 12 miles north-east from Ipswich, 10 north from
Woodbridge, 5 from Wickham Market, and 6 south-by-east from Debenham. The church
of All Saints is a Gothic building, with a square tower, nave, and chancel, and
has recently been restored by Mr. Austin. The living is a vicarage, annual value
£130, with modern residence, in the gift of Charles Austin, Esq., J.P., and held
by the Rev Henry Valentine Pickering, B.A. There is a chapel belonging to the
Independents, capable of accommodating 400 persons, built in 1838. A school for
poor children is supported by Charles Austin, Esq., J.P., who is lord of the
manor and principal landowner. The population in 1861 was 469, and the area is
1,224 acres of strong, clayey land.
