My grandfather, Richard Davison, was a Greene King tenant of the Chequers, and later the George. Please note the correct spelling of his surname; as the Kelly Directory is incorrect. *

8th October 1931/John Robert Charles Blake/../../../Register of Licences, Suffolk Record Office *

The Licence was voluntarily surrendered on 5th December 1957, at which date the pub closed, and my grandfather continued to live at the premises until his death in 1976. The death of my grandmother earlier in the year triggered the closure of the pub. *

The license was transferred by Greene King to their new pub the Greengage, Tollgate Lane, Bury St Edmunds. There was once a framed notice to this effect in the Greengage. *
