BUTLEY is a parish and village, in Loeshundred, Plomesgate union, and
Woodbridge county court district, East Suffolk, 4 miles west from Orford, and 7
east from Woodbridge. The church of St. John is a stone building. The living is
a perpetual curacy, with the chapelry of Capel St. Andrew annexed, joint annual
value £135, in the gift of Lord Rendlesham; the Rev. Frederic Charles Toole
Hobbins, of King's College, London, is the incumbent. Butley Priory, about half
a mile distant from the church, is now occupied by the present incumbent. Here
is a National school, in which the children of this parish and those of Capel
St. Andrew are educated. Butley is near the head of a wide creek of the Alde.
Here are several crag pits. The population in 1861 was 385, and the area is
1,941 acres.
