BUXHALL is a parish and small village, 3 ½ miles west-by-south-west
from Stowmarket station, and 84 from London, in Stow hundred, union, county
court district and rural deanery, Suffolk archdeaconry, Norwich diocese, West
Suffolk. The church of St. Mary is a very ancient edifice, built principally of
flintstone: it consists of nave, chancel, and massive square tower, supported by
buttresses: there are 5 bells, a very ancient stone font, and several monumental
slabs to the Copinger and Hill families. The register dates from 1558. The
living is a rectory, the tithes commuted at £680, with residence, in the gift
of, and held by, the Rev. Copinger Hill, M. A., rural dean. Here is a Parochial
school, supported by the rector. The Rev. Copinger Hill, M.A. (who is lord of
the manor), R. 0. Fuller, Esq., Capt. Garnham, Mrs. Bennet, and Mr. Thos. Steam
are the principal landowners. The soil is of a mixed nature, but in most parts a
stiff clay. There are a few small charities. The parish contains 2,120 acres,
and had a population in 1861 of 536.
Parish Clerk, Robert Durrant.
