CAVENHAM is a parish and village, on Iknield Way, 4 ½ miles south-east from Mildenhall, and 7 west-north-west from Bury, in Lackford hundred, Mildenhall union and county court district, Fordham rural deanery, Sudbury archdeaconry, and Ely diocese, West Suffolk. The church of St. Andrew is a small ancient Gothic building of rubble and stone, and consists of nave, chancel, south porch, and square tower containing 3 bells. The living is a discharged vicarage, present annual value £119, arising from £100 rent of 300 acres of land, allotted in lieu of vicarial tithes, and interest of £400 Royal Bounty, in the gift of the Lord Chancellor, and held by the Rev. Thomas William Carwardine, M.A. There is a village school, supported principally by H. S. Waddington, Esq. The soil is light and sandy. W. F. G. Farmer, Esq., is lord of the manor; and H. S. Waddington, Esq., and Trinity College, Cambridge, are the chief landowners. There is a small charity, left by W. Fermage, which produces £1 per annum. Cavenham Hall, the residence of Henry Spencer Waddington, Esq., is a very handsome mansion, situated in a small park. Cavenham Heath extends to the river Lark, which is navigable on the north of this parish, where it is crossed by Temple bridge, and the parish is watered by one of its tributary brooks. The population of the parish in 1861 was 229, and the area 2,630 acres.
