CHEDISTON is a village and parish, in Blything hundred and union, Halesworth county court district, rural deanery of Dunwich, Suffolk archdeaconry, diocese of Norwich, East Suffolk, 2 miles west from Halesworth (its post town and county court district) and the Blyth navigation. The church of St. Mary is a plain old building, with a tower and 3 bells. The living is a vicarage, consolidated with the rectory of Halesworth, joint annual value £450, with 61 ½ acres of glebe land and cottages, in the gift of Sir T. F. Buxton, Bart., and held by the Rev. Vincent John 8tanton, M.A., of St. John's College, Cambridge. Here is a Parochial school, and the Primitive Methodists have a chapel. Chediston Hall, the seat of Thomas Rant, Esq., J.P., is a handsome building, in the Elizabethan style, situated on elevated ground in a pleasant park. John Crabtree and Francis James Ridsdale, Esqrs., as trustees to the estate of the late George Parkyns, Esq., are lords of the manor and chief landowners. There are two charities— Smith's and Sagar's, the latter amounts to £1 per year, which is given to twenty of the oldest poor men belonging to the parish; and the other is given away in bread: on an average of the last seven years it has amounted to £18 12s. 4d. per year. The soil is clay; and the chief crops are wheat, barley, beans, turnips, mangold wurtzel, and pasture. The population in 1861 was 418; the area is 2,360a. 3r. 27p.; the gross value is £4,103 5s. 0d., and the rateable value £3,566.
