CHELMONDISTON is a village and parish, 6 miles south-east from Ipswich, in Samford hundred, union, and
rural deanery, Ipswich county court district, archdeaconry of Suffolk, and Norwich diocese, East Suffolk, on the bank of the broad and navigable Orwell, near its mouth. St. Andrew's church is an old, small, dilapidated edifice, with a square tower, but plans have been prepared and subscriptions entered into, through the exertions of John Berners, Esq., and the present rector, for the enlargement and complete restoration of this venerable fabric. The parish register begins 1727. The living is a rectory, annual value 312, with modern residence, in the gift of the Lord Chancellor, and held by the Rev. Thomas George Beaumont, M.A., of Magdalen College, Cambridge; the Rev. Herbert De Lisle, M.A., of Trinity College, Dublin, is the curate.
There is a Baptist and a Wesleyan chapel. A good trade is carried on here in dredging for septaria, employing as
many as 70 boats; this stone forms the very finest Roman cement. Mr. Lucas Charles King is the chief manufacturer. John Berners, Esq., is principal landowner. Here is a well conducted private boarding school, in extensive grounds, most pleasantly situated, the principal of which is the Rev. J. B. Meadows, M.A., of Corpus Christi College, Cambridge. In its locality this village bears the name of Pin Mill. The population in 1861 was 949, and the area is 1,627 acres.
