Chillesford is a village and parish, in Plomesgate hundred and union,
Woodbridge county court district, rural deanery of Orford, archdeaconry of
Suffolk, and diocese of Ely, East Suffolk, 9 miles north-east from Woodbridge,
and 3 north-west from Orford. The church of St Peter is a stone building. The
living is a rectory, annual value £355, with residence, in the gift of the Rev W
E Pooley, and held by the Rev Charles Pickthorn. A school has been erected by
the rector, who supports the same at his own expense. The parish is near the
head of the Butley river, on which is a watermill. In the neighbourhood is a
decoy. The population in 1861 was 214, and the area is 1,806 acres.
