Chilton is a parish and village, in Sudbury union and county court
district, Babergh hundred, Sudbury rural deanery and archdeaconry, and diocese
of Ely, West Suffolk, a mile and a half north-east from Sudbury station. The
register dates from 1623. The living is a discharged rectory; the tithes were
commuted in 1839 for £208 per annum, with 25 acres of glebe, in the gift of W C
Parmenter esq. , and held by the Rev William Nesfield Andrews, M.A, of Jesus
College, Cambridge. Here is a barrow. The population in 1861 was 149, and the
area is 979 acres.
