CODDENHAM is a parish and large village, about 80 miles from London, 3 east from Needham Market railway station, 3 north from Claydon railway station, 7 south-west from Debenham, about the same distance from Stowmarket, and 7 north from Ipswich, in the hundred and union of Bosmere, county court district of Ipswich, and diocese of Norwich, East Suffolk. The church of St. Mary is a noble Gothic building, with square tower containing 8 bells: the interior has some good monuments, and also a splendid stained glass window, erected by the late vicar, the Rev. J. Longe. The living is a vicarage, with the chapelry of Crowfield annexed, endowed with the rectorial tithes and two farms, and of the joint annual value of £1,009, in the gift of, and held by, the Rev. Robert Longe, B.A., of Caius College, Cambridge. There is an Independent chapel, which will accommodate about 200 persons, and a Free school for the education of the youth of both sexes. Here is a station of the county police. Rear Admiral Sir George N. Broke Middleton, Bart., C.B., is lord of the manor. Chalk is a common character of the soil two feet below the surface on the south and south-west side of the parish, and extends to 70 feet before water appears; there are two large chalk pits in common use. The population in 1861 was 903, and it contains 2,719 acres of well cultivated land.
