COOKLEY ia a parish and small village, in Blything hundred and union,
rural deanery of Dunwich, archdeaconry of Suffolk, Norwich diocese, East
Suffolk, 2 ½ miles west-bysouth-west from Halesworth (its post town, county
court district, and nearest railway station). The church of St. Michael is a
small structure, and comprises tower, nave, and chancel of good proportions, and
there is a good roof of oak, with a few oak seats. The parish register dates
from the year 1539. The living is a rectory, consolidated with that of
Huntingfield, joint annual value £1,054, with residence, in the gift of Lord
Huntingfield, and held by the Rev. William Holland, M.A., of Lincoln College,
Oxford; the curate ia the Rev. Philip Sherlock Gooch, B.A., of Merton College,
Oxford. There is in a retired part of the parish a considerable block of stone,
possibly Druidical, but of which there is no record, more than it gives the name
of The Rock Farm to the farm on which it stands. Lord Huntingfield owns the
chief manor and the greater part of the soil; Miss Sberriff and J. Crabtree,
Esq., are also owners. There is also a small sub-manor of Cook ley Grange.
Thomas Neale, Esq., of Bramfleld, left, in 1701, a yearly rentcharge of £3, to
be given towards the teaching of six poor children, and also 16s. for Bibles,
which sums were left in discharge of a certain legacy of £60 given to Cookley by
Mr. William Wild, late citizen and skinner of London, Mr, Neale's kinsman, to be
disposed of as Mr. Neale should direct and order. The annual value of charities,
parish land and two cottages is £18, applied to the repairs of the church. The
emulation in 1861 was 252; area 1,704 acres; gross value £2,759 15s., and
rateable value £2,390 15s.
