COWLINGE (or COOLING) is a parish and large scattered village, in
Risbridge hundred and union, county court district of Haverhill, Clare rural
deanery, Sudbury archdeaconry, and diocese of Ely, West Suffolk, 8 ¼ miles
north-north-west from Clare and south-south-east from Newmarket. The church of
St. Margaret is an ancient building, consisting of nave, aisles, chancel, and a
handsome tower of red brick, containing a peal of 5 bells : in the interior of
the church are several ancient brasses. The living is a perpetual curacy, annual
value £100, in the gift of the Master and Fellows of Trinity Hall, Cambridge,
and held by the Rev. H. S. Banks, LL.D. The rectorial tithes produce about £900
a year, and belong to Trinity Hall. There isan Independent chapel. Here are two
fairs annually for cattle and sheep, on July 31st and October 17th. The present
lord ol the manor of Cowlinge is a minor, who is also chief landowner, the
estate being in the hands of the Trustees of the late James Simpson, esq. There
is another small manor in the parish called Shardelows, which belongs to Downing
College, Cambridge. Branches Park, a handsome seat, with extensive grounds,
belonging to the infant heir of Cowlinge, is at present in the occupation of Sir
Robert Pigot, Bart. The charities are ten acres of land, held by the parish
clerk as annexed to his office, donor unknown, and £20, distributed in sheets
and blankets to the poor from Deyne's charity, consisting of a farm at Cowlinge,
the rent of which is divided among the parishes of Moulton, Barrow, Cowlinge,
and Hargrave. The soil is clay; the crops are wheat, barley, beans, peas, and
roots. The population in 1861 was 842; area, 6,026 acres.
