EARL SOHAM is a parish and large village, in Plomesgate union, Loes hundred and rural deanery, Framlingham and Saxmundhani county court district, archdeaconry of Suffolk, and diocese of Norwich, East Suffolk, 4 ½ miles west from Framlingham, 3 cast from Debenham, and 90 from London. The church is named St. Mary's. The living is a rectory, annual value £607, with residence, in the gift of the Master and Fellows of Wadliam College, Oxford, and held by the Rev. John Hindes Groome, M.A., of Pembroke College, Cambridge. There is a Free school connected with the Church; the schoolroom was built by subscriptions from the rector and landowners generally, and is maintained by the subacriptions of the rector and others. There are also several sums left for charitable purposes in this parish.
There are two chapels, Wesleyan and Baptist, The population in 1861 was 745; the parish contains 1,944a. 2r. 38p.
