East Bergholt is a parish, small town and polling place for the eastern
division of the county, Samford Hundred and union, situated near the north
bank of the navigable river Stour, 2 miles west from Manningtree station, 61
from London, 6 south east from Hadleigh and 9� south west from Ipswich.
The church of St Mary is in the perpendicular style; its tower was never
finished, dated 1522. The population in 1871 was 1,320.
