EAST BERGHOLT is a parish and small town, in Samford hundred, union,
and rural deanery, and county court district of Hadleigh, Suffolk archdeaconry,
and diocese of Norwich, East Suffolk, pleasantly situated near the north bank of
the navigable river Stour, 2 miles north-west from Manningtree station, 61 from
London, 6 southeast from Hadleigh, and 9 south-west from Ipswich: it formerly
had a market, and a considerable manufacture of flannel, baize, &c, but they
went to decay more than a century ago. It has a fair for toys, etc., on the last
Wednesday in July. The church of St. Mary is a neat structure, in the Decorated
Gothic style: its tower was never finished, the sums given in the year 1522
having been inadequate for its completion: the 5 bells bang in a sort of cage in
the churchyard. The living is a rectory, annual value 820, in the gift of
Emmanuel College, Cambridge, and held by the Rev. Joseph Woolley, M.A. Here are
chapels for Independents, Wesleyans, and Methodists. St. Mary's Abbey, situated
in a large and finely wooded park, is a convent of Benedictine Nuns, originally
established at Brussels in the reign of Queen Elizabeth, driven by the troubles
of the French revolution to England in the year 1794: they settled at Winchester
till the year 1857, when they purchased this property. These religious ladies,
besides the observance of the duties prescribed by the Benedictine rule, conduct
a first class establishment for young ladies, and support a school for poor
children. A chapel for the friends and visitors of the establishment and
neighbourhood is opened to the public on Sundays. There are many charitable
bequests left for the benefit of the poor. William Sidney Calvert, Esq., is lord
of the four manors called Old Hall, Illaries, Spencer's, and Commandree,
otherwise St. John's, in which the custom of Borough English prevails. These
manors were formerly held by the Hankeys. St. John was given by Henry II. to the
Templars, and afterwards to the Knights of St. John of Jerusalem, but was
granted to the Earl of Oxford in the 36th of Henry VIII. In 1562 here were three
water-mills, but only one of them now remains. In 1861 the population was 1,307;
area, 3,063 acres. Pariah Clerk, Stephen Sage.
