ELLOUGH, in the vale of a rivulet, 3 1/2 miles S. by E. of Beccles, is a
small scattered village and parish, containing 155 souls, and 1673a. 3r. 32p. of
fertile and well wooded land. The Earl of Gosford is lord of the manor, which
formerly belonged to the Playters, but part of the soil belongs to Frederick.
Barne, Esq, and several smaller owners. The Church (All Saints) is an ancient
structure, with a lofty tower, and the living is a discharged rectory, valued in
K.B. at £12, and in 1835 at £257. The Earl of Gosford is patron, and the Rev.
Richard Aldous Arnold incumbent. The rectory-house was enlarged about ten years
ago, and the glebe is 35a. 28p., of which 16a. 3r. 28p. is in Willingham parish.
The Farmers are, Susan Artis, Chas. Debenham, William. Green, George Hamby, East
House; Samuel Holmes, Ellough Hall; Thomas Paine, Samuel Pells, John Pleasants,
and Samuel Weavers. Nathaniel Money is the gamekeeper.
