ASHFIELD (or GREAT ASHFIELD), near Ixworth, is a small village, 2 miles north from Elmswell station, 88 from London, 6 from Ixworth, and 10 from Bury St. Edmund's, in Blaekbourn hundred, Stowunion, Bury St.Edmund's county court district, rural deanery of Blackbourn, archdeaconry of Sudbury, and diocese of Ely, West Suffolk. The church of All Saints is a small brick building, with tower. The living is a perpetual curacy, value £65, in the gift of Lord Thurlow, and held by the Rev. John H. Steggall, M.A., of Corpus Christi College, Cambridge. There is also an endowed lectureship, held by the Rev. Henry Ray, M.A. Ashfield Lodge, the seat of Sir Henry C. Blake, Bart., J.P., is a neat brick mansion. Here is a school (mixed), supported by Lord Thurlow and the Misses Bolton. Castle Hill is a mound. The population in 1861 was 408; the area is 1,546 acres.
