GROTON is a parish, in Cosford union, Babergh hundred, Hadleigh county court
district, rural deanery and archdeaconry of Sudbury, and diocese of Ely,
West Suffolk, 7 miles east from Sudbury station, 6 west from Hadleigh, and
74 from London. The church of St. Bartholomew, an ancient building, has
nave, chancel, north and south aisles, and tower with 5 bells. Earliest date
of register, 1560. The living is a rectory, tithe rent-charge �457, with 37
acres of glebe, in the gift of J. W. Willett, Esq., and held by the Rev.
John Savile Hallifax, M.A., of Trinity College. Oxford, of Edwardstone; the
Rev. Richard Henry Bicknell, M.A., is curate. There is an almhouse, with
gardens attached, for four persons, purchased in 1762, and kept in repair by
the parish. The population in 1861 was 554, and the area is 1,571 acres.
