HARKSTEAD is a parish and village, in Samford hundred and union,
Ipswich county court district, East Suffolk), 7 miles east from Manningtree
station, and 7 south from Ipswich, extending to the estuary of the Stour. The
church of St. Mary is a neat structure, with a square tower and 5 bells. The
register extends hack to the early part of the seventeenth century. The living
is a rectory, tithes commuted at �470, with 55 acres of glebe land, in the gift
of Mr. Ralph Berners, and held by the Rev. Herbert Bree, M.A., of Caius College,
Cambridge. Here was formerly a chapel, dedicated to St. Clement. The population
in 1861 was 380, and the area is 2,266 acres. John Berners, Esq., Bree Rev.
Herbert, M.A. (rector) of Woolverstone Hall, is lord of the manor, which was
held by Odo de Campania at the Domesday Survey, and is also chief landowner.
