Hopton Public Houses
HOPTON in 1844, is a large, pleasant and well-built village, in the vale of the
Little Ouse, 5 miles W.N.W. of Botesdale, and 8 miles N.N.E. of Ixworth, has in
its parish 623 inhabitants, and 1,321a. 3r. 22p. of fertile land. Thomas
Tbornhill, Esq., is lord of the manor, formerly held by Bury Abbey; but part of
the soil belongs to J. Goodrich, Esq., and several smaller owners. The Church
(All Saints) is a neat structure with a tower and six bells. The living is a
discharged rectory, valued in K.B. at �13 5s., and in 1835 at �284. The
patronage is in the Crown, and the Rev. Henry Dawson is the incumbent. The
Wesleyans have a commodious chapel here, built in 1836.
