KELSALE is a parish and large village, in Hoxne hundred, Blything
union, Framlingham and Saxmundham county court district, rural deanery of
Dunwich, archdeaconry of Suffolk, and diocese of Norwich, East Suffolk, about a
mile and a half north from Saxmundham. It stands on the side of a hill facing
the south; the houses are well built, and surrounded by gardens, and its
situation is altogether highly picturesque. The church of St. Peter, principally
built of flint, in the Saxon style, stands on a hill at the north side of the
village, and from the summit of its tower there is a most pleasing and extensive
view over the surrounding country: the tower has a fine set of 8 bells, and a
neat clock, and in the church is a handsome organ, the gift of Samuel Clouting,
Esq., in the years 1838 and 1830: there are escutcheons in the church of the
Norfolk and Trusson families, and the font is very ancient. The register
commences from 1669. The living is a rectory, with that of Carlton annexed,
joint annual value �700, with residence, in the gift of Henry Edward Bence,
Esq., and held by the Rev. Lancelot Robert Brown, M.A. There are several lands
and tenements in the parish appropriated for the repairs of the church and the
relief of the poor, and a Free grammar and writing school, also a Free school
for about 70 girls, supported by the rector. The master and mistress of the
schools have also the superintendence of the Sunday school. The population in
1861 was 1,084, and the area is 3,074 acres.
KELSALE closely adjoins Carlton. Dorley's Corner is a part of Kelsale. North
Green is a mile north-east.
