KIRKLEY is a parish,adjoining Lowestoft, one part forming a suburb to the new town of Lowestoft, and the other part forming a joint village with Pakefield, the latter being on the south-east side of the road or street which divides the parishes and Kirkley on the north-west side: they stand on a lofty eminence, commanding a fine view of the German ocean. It. is in the Mutford and Lothingland incorporation and hundred, Lowestoft county court district, rural deanery of Lothingland. archdeaconry of Suffolk, and diocese of Norwich, East Suffolk, and the village is a mile and a half south from Lowestoft, 12 miles south from Yarmouth, 8 ½ east from Beccles, and 6 ½ north-east from Wrentham. The church of St. Peter is on lofty ground, serving as a land mark to mariners, and has a square tower, and the appearance of great antiquity: it. is in a very decayed state. The living is a rectorv, valued at £142 10s. per annum, in the gift, of, and held by, the Rev. H. Willmott, M.A., of Pembroke College, Oxford. The inhabitants are principally engaged in fishing. An allotment of land, awarded at the time of the enclosure, now lets for £15 per annum, which amount is distributed in coals to the poor. The population in 1801 was 1,129, and the area is 579 acres.
