KIRTON (or KIRKTON) is a small village and parish, near the mouth of
the Deben, 7 miles south from Woodbridge, in Colneis hundred and rural deanery,
Woodbridge union and county court district. Suffolk archdeaconry, and diocese of
Norwich, East Suffolk. The church of St. Mary is a rubble building, in the Early
English style of architecture, with stone tower, and a new aisle for the free
use of the poor: the late rector discovered a very ancient piscina, which is in
good preservation. The living is a rectory, net value £500 yearly, with
residence, and 5 acres of glebe land, in the gift of the Lord Chancellor, and
held by the Rev. George Philip Bartlett, M.A. There is a Wesleyan chapel. The
charitable bequest consists of 8 ½ acres of land, called the Poor's land, now
let for £12 10s., which sum is distributed in coals at a cheap rate among the
poor. A former rector here was the father of Clara Reeve, authoress of ' The Old
English Baron." The soil is light; the subsoil,
crag and white sand. The principal crops are wheat and barley. The owners of the
land are the Ipswich Charity Trustees and various small proprietors. There are
two manors: the Duke of Hamilton is lord of one, and Miss Cartwright, of Bury
St. Edmund's, is lady of the other. The population in 1801 was 541, and the area
is 1,898 acres.
Parish Clerk, Charles Fairhead.
