LAVENHAM was formerly a market town: it is a polling place for West
Suffolk, and is in Babergh hundred, Cosford union, Sudbury county court
district, rural deanery and archdeaconry of Suffolk, and diocese of Ely, West
Suffolk, situate on the Bury and Sudbury Railway, 10 miles northwest-by-west
from Hadleigh, and 7 north-east-by-north from Sudbury station. The church of St.
Peter and St. Paul is a very handsome structure: it is constructed of Kasterton
stone, intermixed with flint: Its extreme length is 180 feet; its breadth 68
feet: the tower (141 feet high) is very fine, being beautifully proportioned,
and contains 8 bells. The register commences 1558. The living is a rectory,
value �860, with residence and 140 acres of glebe, in the gift of the Master and
Fellows of Caius College, Cambridge, and held by the Rev. Joseph Morrison
Croker, M.A., of that college; the Rev. Andrew Beck, M.A., of the same college,
is curate. George Richard Pye, Eso,., is lord of the manor. The annual value of
the charities is �450, together with thirty almshouses, which are given rent
free to poor aged persons. In the town are two chapels, Independent and
Wesleyan. There are National and British schools, also a Grammar school, free
for five scholars, which is supported by certain charities. Here is a
manufactory for horsehair seatings, cocoanut fibre, etc. The soil is heavy. The
population in 1861 was 1,823, and the area is 2,887 acres.
