LAWSHALL is a parish, in Babergh hundered, Bury St. Edmund's county
court district, Sudbury union and archdeaconry, and diocese of Ely, West
Suffolk, 6 � miles south-by-east from Bury St. Edmund's, and 9 � north from
Sudbury. The church (All Saints) has been thoroughly repaired and re-seated, at
an expense of about �6,000; it has handsome window over the communion table, and
two painted windows in aisles. The living is a rectory, the tithes commuted in
1839 for a yearly rent charge of �709, with 38 acres of glebe and residence, in
the gift of the trustees of the late Sir William Middleton, and held by the Rev.
Barrington Stopford Thomas Mills, M.A.; the Rev. William Tyrwhitt Drake, M.A.,
is the curate. There are several small charities. Here is a horsehair
manufactory for sofa and chair covers, which gives employment to a considerable
number of hands. A Sunday school was built about 1820 by Mrs. Barrington Purvis,
at a cost of about �600; it is now conducted on the National system. The
population in 1861 was 903, and the area is 2,909 acres.
