LAYHAM is a parish, in the union and hundred of Cosford, Hadleigh
county court district, rural deanery and
archdeaconry of Sudbury, and diocese of Ely, West Suffolk, a mile and a half
south from Hadleigh station, in two manors, called OVERBURY and NETHRRBURY
HALLS, of which J. F. Robinson, Esq., of the Hall, Hadleigh, is lord.
The church is named St. Andrew. The register dates from 1538. The living is a
rectory, annual value £800, in
the gift of St. John's College, Cambridge, and held by the Rev. Henry Hunter
Hughes, B.D., formerly fellow and
senior tutor of that college; the Rev. Edward Lerming, M.A., is curate. The
population in 1861 was 534, and the
area is 2,488 acres.
