LETHERINGHAM is a small village and parish, In Loes hundred,
Plomesgate union, Framlingham and Saxmundham county court district, and Norwich
diocese. East Suffolk, 3 � miles south from Framlingham, 2 � from Wickham
Market, 7 from Woodbridge, and 84 from London, on the river Deben, which is here
only a small stream. The church of St. Mary is an old building, with a nave and
tower. The living is a perpetual curacy, consolidated with that of Hoo, joint
annual value �110, in the gift of the Church Patronage Association, and held by
the Rev. John Dixon, M.A., of St. John's College, Cambridge. The Duke of
Hamilton, who is lord of the manor, and Andrew Arcedeckne, Esq., are the
principal landowners. Letheringham was formerly a priory of black canons, formed
by Sir Edwin Bovile, as a cell to St. Peter's Priory, Ipswich, and was valued at
the Dissolution at �26 18s. 5d. The population in 1861 was 208, and the area is
1,134 acres of land, most part arable. Assessed value of property �1,352 16s.
