LINSTEAD MAGNA is a small village and parish, consisting of a few scattered farms, in Blythlng hundred and
union, Halesworth county court district, rural deanery of Dunwich, archdeaconry of Suffolk, Norwich diocese, East Suffolk, 5 miles west from Halesworth. The church of St. Peter, an old building with a tower, is situated on an enclosed piece of ground, surrounded by fields. The parish registers ate from the year 1654 to 1812; after the latter date 30 years are missing. The living is a perpetual curacy, valued at �97 per annum, in the gift of the Rev. Edward Hollond, M.A., And held by the Rev. Frederick Evans, M.A.; the Rev. Thomas Bonsall, M.A., who resides at Lower Linstead, is the curate. Lord Huntingfield is lord of the manor and principal owner of the land. The soil is clayey, with a subsoil of clay. The chief crops are wheat, barley, beans, turnips, and pasture. The gross value is �2,050 15s. and the rateable value �1,815 3s. The population in 1861 was 115, and the area is 1,304 acres.
