METFIELD is a large village and parish, in Hoxne hundred, union and
rural deanery, county court district of Harleston, Suffolk archdeaconry, Norwich
diocese, East Suffolk, 5 miles south-east from Harleston railway station, and 7
north-west from Halesworth. The church of St. John is an old building, with
square tower containing 3 bells, nave and chancel: in the interior is an ancient
carved font. The parish register dates from the year 1540. The living is a
donative, annual value �11, with 45 acres of glebe, and a handsome residence, in
the gift of the parishioners, and held by the Rev. Thomas Joseph Brereton, B.A.,
of Christ Church, Oxford. The Rev. J. N. Micklethwait is the impropriator of the
tithes, commuted at a rent-charge of �380 4s. 8d. The National School is endowed
with �16, and is supported chiefly by the parishioners. The land is a mixed
soil, and belongs to different proprietors. The lady of the manor is Mrs.
Rayley, of Southwold, who owns an estate here, called Metfield Hall. There are
small charities, which are distributed amongst the poor. The chief crops are
wheat, barley, beans, turnips, and pasture. The population in 1861 was 663, and
the area is 2,162 acres, including a large common. The gross value is �3,452
12s. 6d., and the rateable value �2,980 10s.
