MIDDLETON-cum-FORDLEY Is a village and parish, in Blything hundred and union, Halesworth county court district, rural deanery of Dunwich, archdeaconry of Suffolk, diocese of Norwich, East Suffolk, 4 miles northeast from Saxmundham. The church of the Holy Trinity is an old building, with a thatched roof: the tower, which contains 5 bells, is surmounted by a spire: the church has recently been externally faced with flint stone, and otherwise restored. The registers date from the year 1653. Fordley church formerly stood in the same churchyard, but no vestiges at present remain. The living of Middleton-cum-Fordley is a discharged rectory, joint annual value �161 10s. with residence, in the gift of the Rev. Edmund Hollond, and held by the Rev. Joseph White, B.A. The charities are about �3 9s. per annum. Here are a Wesleyan chapel and a church school. The population in 1861 was 589, and the area is 1,420 acres.
FORDLEY an adjoining hamlet, was once a separate parish, but is now united with Middleton, and called Middleton-cum-Fordley.
