MILDEN is a small village and parish, in the hundred Babergb, union
of Cosford, county court district of Hadleigh, rural deanery and archdeaconry of
Sudbury, and diocese of Ely, West Suffolk, 4 miles east from Lavenham, 7 from
Sudbury, and also the same distance north-west from Hadleigh station. The church
of St. Peter is of Norman structure; it has a square tower, and has been
repaired, and an organ erected: in the chancel is an ancient monument to the
memory of James Allington, who died in 1626. The register dates from 1558. The
living is a rectory, value £340 in the gift of John Gurdon esq,. and held by the
Rev. Nathaniel William Hallward, M.A., of Worcester College, Oxford. The annual
value of the charities is about £10. The late Rev. W. Burkitt left a valuable
library to the incumbents of this place. The population in 1861 was 159, and the
extent of the parish is 1,339 acres.
