MUTFORD is a village and small parish, giving name to the Mutford and
Lothingland incorporation and hundred, in Lowestoft county court district, East
Suffolk, 14 miles from Yarmouth, 5 south-east from Beccles, and 5 ½ southwest
from Lowestoft. The church of St. Andrew is small and ancient, with round tower
containing 3 bells: it has a nave, chancel, south aisle, a porch on the south
side, and a western entrance or Galilee. The register dates from 1540. The
living is a vicarage, consolidated with that of Barnby, joint annual value £660,
in the patronage of the Master and Fellows of Gonville and Caius College,
Cambridge, and held by the Rev. D. M. Dulling. Here is a small Wesleyan chapel,
and a Parochial school, built by the late vicar, the Rev. William Okes, M.A. R.
H. Reeve, Esq., is lord of the manor; and Messrs. Samuel Robinson, Elliott
Chalker, Henry Woodthorpe, Thos. Pead Gooda, and the Rev. Arthur Gilbert, M.A.,
are chief landowners. Here are a few charities' and an allotment of 15 acres of
land, which lets for £15 per annum, laid out in coals and distributed to the
poor in the winter; there is also the sum of 10s. a year payable to the poor of
the parish out of Mr. Chalker'a estate. The Incorporation of Mutford and
Lothingland comprises the following places: Ashby, Barnby, Belton, Blundeston,
Bradwell, Burgh Castle, Carlton Colville, Corton, Flixton, Fritton, Gisleham,
Gorleston, Gunton, Herringfleet, Hopton, Kessingland, Kirkley, Lound, Lowestoft,
Mutford, Oulton, Pakefield, Rushmere, and Somerleyton. The population in 1861
was 386, and the area is 1,574 acres.
