NACTON is a village and parish, pleasantly situated on the banks of
the navigable river Orwell, in Woodbridge union, Ipswich county court district,
Colneis hundred and rural deanery, archdeaconry of Sudbury, and diocese of
Norwich, East Suffolk, 4 miles south-east from Ipswich station, and 8 from
Woodbridge. The church of St. Martin is a rubble building, consisting of nave,
chancel, and porch, with tower. The register dates from 1562. The living is a
rectory, consolidated with Levington, in the gilt of the trustees of the late
Lady Harland, and held by the Rev. Harry Edgell, M.A., of St. John's College,
Cambridge; the tithes are commuted for £296 4s. 10d. Orwell Park, the seat of
George Tomline, Esq., M.P., J.p. is a fine brick building. The Woodbridge Union
House is situated here. Rear Admiral Sir G. N. Broke Middleton, Hart., C.B., is
lord of the manor, and one of the principal landowners in the parish; George
Tomline, Esq., M.P., also owns a large portion of land. Broke Hall is a noble
mansion, situated on the Orwell, the property of Rear-Admiral Sir George
Nathaniel Broke Middleton, Bart., C.B. Near the union workhouse are several
tumuli or barrows; human bones have frequently been found here; there are
several crag pits. The soil is of a light Bandy nature; subsoil, sand and crag.
The crops are wheat and barley. The population in 1861 was 574, including 100
inmates in the union house, and the area is 1,882a. Sr. 20p.
