NAYLAND (or NEYLAND) is a parish and small town, in Babergh hundred,
Sudbury union rural deanery and archdeaconry, diocese of Ely, West Suffolk, on
the borders of Essex, on the navigable Stour, 5 miles cast from Bures station,
56 from London by rail and road, and 12 from Manningtree. The church of St.
Stephen is an ancient structure, having nave, chancel, north and south aisles,
tower and 6 musical bells. The register commences in the year 1558. The living
is a perpetual curacy, annual value �139, with residence, in the gift of Sir
Robert
Charles Rowley, Bart., and held by the Rev. James Taylor Brown, M.A., of
Christ's College, Cambridge. There is an Independent chapel, erected in 1864,
and National and British schools for boys and girls. There are charities of
considerable annual value. Here are makings and a brewery; also a large corn
mill belonging to Mr. J. Stannard, and a silk winding mill. On the river is a
trade in corn, coals, and timber. Here is a small literary institution, with
library attached, which has been established about 10 years, and is supported by
members paying 10s. annually. Sir Charles R. Rowley, Bart., is lord of the
manor. The population in 1861 was 1,061, and the acreage is 941.
